What Is An IEP?

What Is An IEP?

IEP stands for Individualized Education Program. Kids receive special education services and supports through IEP’s. These services and supports are individualized and tailored to the child's individual needs. Districts determine these needs by conducting psychoeducational evaluations to determine if a student is eligible for an IEP. A psychoeducational assessment includes assessments done in the areas of cognition, academics and any other area(s) of suspected disability, including speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, assistive technology, and other areas.

A psychoeducational assessment will give data and baselines on where your child is performing. If your child is found eligible for an IEP, this data and your child's present levels of performance will help the team write goals addressing your child’s areas of weakness. IEP’s contain individual goals as wells as accommodations a child needs in order to make progress in school.
